Our History
Brookfield Veterinary Practice has a rich history that spans over 50 years, founded by Norman White in 1970 as a mixed animal practice. Initially serving all species, it transitioned to a dedicated small animal practice in 1985. The practice has grown and modernised with the latest facilities and equipment to stay at the forefront of veterinary care.
The building itself has a fascinating past: it was once a public house called The Whalebone. The basement, which once housed the bar and public areas, is now home to essential areas like the prep room, operating theatre, x-ray room, laboratory, and kennels. The ground floor, once the landlord’s living space, now contains the reception, waiting room, consultation rooms, and pharmacy.
Chris Darke became part of the practice in 2004, and a year later became a partner. Norman White retired from the partnership in 2008, reducing his hours until his departure in 2010. At this point, Chris and his wife Victoria Darke took over the practice, with Victoria joining in 2004 and becoming a partner in 2010.
In 2016, Brookfield expanded with the acquisition of Argus Vets in Ledbury, where Eden Tanner, the previous owner of Argus, continues to be part of the team.
The practice faced a challenging year in 2020, when floods in Hereford led to extensive refurbishment of the basement. This was followed by the COVID-19 lockdown, which added further strain. However, the practice remained resilient, and in August 2021, the Ledbury branch was relocated to new, purpose-built premises at The Nook on Hereford Road.
As Brookfield continues to grow, it has expanded its veterinary team of surgeons and support staff, ensuring that they can meet the needs of the community with modern, compassionate care for all its patients.
